Finding my way out,  Grief

One Thing At A Time

Step by Step

I know it’s something that is said all of the time, albeit in different ways,
One foot In front of the other
Step by step
Moment by moment

I have heard these things said all the time, and I had always thought I knew exactly what it meant. But when times get really tough my head just seems to go into a tailspin, thinking about all of the different things that need to be done, ways I need to change my life, looking back at the past hurts, missing the ones I love the most. My heart starts racing, my thoughts although plenty feel aimless as the list, the regrets, wishing I could turn back time, they just keeps going.

Ironically a lot of the thoughts also include

Moment by moment
One step at a time
One foot in front of the other

I just want to give up, stop
And that’s exactly what I do sometimes
I decide, right – I am just going to do nothing today, just relax, don’t stress about anything.
That’s one good thing I have learnt in the journey, don’t take on too much.
Now that’s great and has been really helpful. But when I have rested enough, my mind starts the chatter again, the list of things I have to do, change, learn.

I know I can’t keep going like this, the highs (well more like mediums, if there were such a phrase).

So I am working on changing one thing, when I’m panicking, I need something that’s going to bring me down slowly, not the extreme of doing nothing.
So I write a list, a set of actual instructions I can follow in order to bring me back to place of calm. This way I have something else to focus on

  1. stop what you are doing
  2. Breath in
  3. Breath out
  4. Sit down
  5. Breath in
  6. Breath out

This may sound silly and obvious but for me, it’s making something conceptual,  sayings I have heard and making it real for myself.

I know I’m am logical
I know that if I am following instructions my mind doesn’t wander, it quietens down.

So Instead of thinking,
Step by step
Moment by moment

Looking at it as a ideal way of being
I am making it more practical, something that will work for me

  1. stop what you are doing
  2. Breath in
  3. Breath out
  4. Sit down
  5. Breath in
  6. Breath out
